Message From Our Director

We Got You Covered (WGYC) is a not-for-profit organization that was developed out of sheer desperation to save lives. Our Purpose is to resuscitate literacy achievement among inner-city African American boys who reside in socio-economically deprived areas that are crime and drug infested.
Based on my experiences within the Chicago Public Schools and as a member of the Chicago Police Department I am of the same opinion of Frederick Douglas when he said, "It is easier to build strong African American boys than to repair broken men." And as Carol Day informs us, "For where there is no faith in your future success, there is no real effort to prepare you for it.”

Dr. Kimberly D. Lloyd, Ph.D. ~ Director

Our Cause

WGYC hopes to alleviate the learning gap that circumvents a child’s development and progress. Our staff will serve as a liaison to CPS teachers with the hope of developing a partnership that serves as a conduit for “at-risk youth.” WGYC will develop a curriculum that is unmolested by bureaucracy in order to reach underserved and disenfranchised youth. This ethically enriched curriculum will encourage empathy for the student and provide a curriculum that disseminates palpable information over statistical-based instruction.

Who We Are

We Got You Covered (WGYC) is a not-for-profit organization that was developed out of sheer desperation to save lives. "W.G.Y.C. believes that there is a need to take a developmental approach to literacy instruction. That means that we meet kids where they are and prepare them to move forward."

Our Cause

To eradicate illiteracy among African American boys.

Uniform Drive

WGYC is fully aware that in order to educate a child you must first educate the WHOLE child. Children need to feel good about themselves and that begins with their personal hygiene and having appropriate clothing to wear to school. Having a uniform that is clean and fits properly builds positive self-esteem in young African American boys. WGYC's goal is to refit all of the youth at Urban Prep Academy with new uniforms.

Shoe Drive

Too often we take for granted that children have the basic necessities that they need like appropriate shelter, food, clothing and shoes, however this couldn’t be further from the truth. WGYC is trying to build the WHOLE child. What we know to be true is if children feel good about themselves and their appearance this aids with their development of self-esteem, self-awareness and self-respect. Please help OUR boys!

Our Donors

I believe in Dr. Lloyd's work in her fight against illiteracy of African American boys. I felt a strong sense of urgency to help in any way that I could, consequently I donate to each cause the organizations tackles.

Craig Mallory

Supervisor - Illinois Department of Transportation
As a child I moved 10 times and attended 7 different schools while in grammar school.Consequently, I know the importance of a good education and being a good reader. When Dr. Lloyd asked me to come and speak with these boys I felt compelled to come and talk to them on the importance of not becoming a statistic of their environment. I totally enjoyed the time I spent with them and will come back again.

Nicholas Malone

Chicago Police Officer - Doctoral Student of DePaul University
ComEd and Entrepreneur with his own activewear clothing line called YBE apparel. - I grew up in Stateway Gardens and I didn't think I would make it to the age 21 but when I did I knew I had to make a living for myself. When I met Dr. Lloyd and she explained what she was trying to do. I immediately said, "yes I can help." I will come and speak with the boys and have a GIVEAWAY of my activewear.

Antonio Greer

LComEd and Owner/ Operator of YBE APPAREL
I have watched my friend, Dr. Lloyd as she works diligently to put this organization together while never losing focus of her goal which is to eradicate illiteracy among African American boys. It has become her life's work and it is a pleasure to donate my money and time to such an amazing cause.

Michelle Reed

Chicago Police Officer
I have known Dr. Lloyd for over 25 years and I'm so excited for the young boys with whom she will impact in a very positive way. I knew she was out-of-pocket by thousands of dollars building WGYC's website, graphic artist to develop a logo, attorney fee for the tax-exempt 501c3 status - and I wanted to help relieve some of the pressure. WGYC will change lives!
